CHARACTER:
Name: Sasori
Age: Exact age unknown; around 45 (appears around 18)
Series: Naruto
Species: 'Living puppet'
Gender: Male appearance; technically neuter
Occupation: Member of Akatsuki/Circus performer
Point of canon to be drawn in: Shortly before the kidnapping of Gaara
Level: Elysium
Number: 1880471

Appearance: If one looks at only his face and hands, Sasori seems to be quite the striking young man, with pale skin, dark eyes, and a short mop of brilliant red hair that falls around his face. He's androgynous to a certain extent, and he often wears a small amount of eye makeup and dark nail polish. His features are regular and symmetrical to a degree that is almost somehow unreal. He tends to wear loose black-and-red clothing.

However, if one looks at his full body it quickly becomes obvious that Sasori is not actually human in most regards. His body is 'jointed' and clearly nonorganic, looking more like a doll than like a person. His chest and stomach are both hollow, and contain various compartments with weapons or tools inside. Where the heart would be on a person there rests a large circular hollow, filled with a container marked with the kanji for 'scorpion' on the lid.

Personality: Sasori is in many ways disconnected from humanity. He has nearly no connection to anything human (or even anything organic), because all he sees in organic beings is their frailty and tendency to decay - a trait that repulses and irritates him. The only things that appeal to him are lasting, which is why he's drawn to fine art, sculpture, dolls, and the like: they're all things that will last long after their impermanent creators fade away. He has no real tolerance or understanding for anything that decays. He can come off as flat or unfeeling when talking to people, and despite the fact that he's anything but, the term 'emotionless' is often applied to him due to his lack of empathy.

He's a bit childish and immature in some ways, despite his age, and he dislikes waiting for things. When in a fight, he tends to taunt his enemy, and he enjoys mocking others. He has no concern about hurting others to get his way, and he's generally a selfish boy.

All of these behaviors are a result of the too-early death of his parents and his various attempts to make it alright with himself. Sasori is, at his core, deeply lonely, and he longs to truly see his parents again. But this aspect of him is long lost in his own mind and unlikely to resurface easily.

Abilities: Sasori has the ability to fully control a wide variety of puppets, which are equipped with various weapons and devices. It takes the use of a full hand to have full control over a puppet, but he can control up to 100 with the use of a device installed in his own chest - he will just have less perfect control over each. He himself possesses several weapons on his own body - flamethrowers in his palm, a long blade on a wire coiled in his stomach, and wing-like blades that extend from his back. All of his weapons and the weapons of his puppets are always coated in strong poisons.

Sasori can also make new puppets by converting the corpses of humans into them. These 'human puppets' possess the same abilities that they possessed in life, and Sasori can use these abilities at will.

History: Sasori was born in the village of Sunagakure to a pair of loving parents, but when he was around five they were both killed on a mission, leaving the boy alone. He was taken in by his grandmother, Chiyo, who did her best to raise the boy. To take his mind off of what had happened to his parents, she taught him the basics of the art of chakra puppeteering, helping him design his first puppets.

Sasori built his parents.

They were perfect replicas - obviously doll-like but otherwise perfect. And for a while Sasori was content with them, making them hug and care for him, but it wasn't the same. When he paused, the puppets would fall, limp. There was no real warmth. No real affection.

And so Sasori started to become obsessed with the idea of fixing the flaws. The idea of creating a puppet that wouldn't ever die, wouldn't ever fade away and leave him behind like his parents had, but that could feel and love and act human. And what better way to do this than to start with a human base and just perfect it?

And so his experiments began. He'd take human subjects and carefully convert them into puppets. He learned to preserve their chakra and their abilities, but personality and free will still eluded him - they only moved on his command. He was disappointed, but he kept trying.

Then he was discovered with one of his experiments. He quickly fled the village before he could be prosecuted, leaving nothing more than the myth of "Sasori of the Red Sand" - a name gained for his hair and for the blood he had spilled.

He continued his experiments even after leaving, of course. A stray ninja lost in the desert here, a risky kidnapping there... He even succeeded in making the Third Kazekage into yet another puppet. But what he was truly seeking still eluded him.

Eventually, he began to age himself, which distressed him deeply. He could not age and rot surrounded by the ageless beauty of his own dolls. The solution was obvious.

Over a period of months, he carefully and slowly replaced each part of his body with the body of a puppet. Eventually, all that was left of Sasori was his heart - if he gave up his humanity fully, his will would be lost as well. He was close enough to perfect now to continue for a while more. He could refine himself further when he discovered how.

He joined the organization Akatsuki when approached because he agreed with some of their basic ideas and saw no reason to not get involved. They funded his experiments and provided him with raw materials, after all, and they helped deal with some of his issues with boredom. He was initially paired off with Orochimaru, but the man later defected, leaving Sasori with the 'artist' Deidara instead. Sasori sent a spy after Orochimaru and tried to adjust to the brashness of his new partner.

Eventually, the pair were given their mission: capture the vessel of the Ichibi, Gaara. Sasori and Deidara prepared himself, but Sasori was pulled to Neo Genesis before they could begin the mission.

False memories: Sasori was born in Terra to a sweet, happy couple that happened to die in an accident when the boy was four.

The young boy was present during the accident and, traumatized it, he fled wildly, finding himself lost in the Abyss until a kind person (man? woman? the boy wasn't certain) took him in and comforted him in a way that was strange but reassuring at the time. The person in question introduced themselves as Hatter, and offered to take care of the boy for a while. Sasori agreed quickly, and Hatter began to dote on him in a strange way that included giving him small puppets that Sasori found himself able to control without any physical strings. He quickly got Hatter to teach him how to make the puppets himself, and he began to work on manufacturing puppets in the shape of his parents.

Eventually Sasori's grandmother, Chiyo, managed to uncover where the boy had fled to and brought him back to raise him in Terra. But Sasori returned to Hatter frequently and continued to work on the puppets he was designing. Eventually the project was complete and he proudly introduced Hatter to his 'parents'.

But his parents never returned the love Sasori gave to them. They were just puppets, after all - dancing at his command. And that was where Sasori started to crack.

It took a while to manifest. He made it through college just fine and became a teacher of fine arts at a small Terra college. He seemed to be stable and well-adjusted, if a bit distant. Things seemed to be fine for him. He still visited Hatter sometimes, but nobody noticed.

Then students from his class started to disappear - always the top students in the class, the ones Sasori formed some form of vague bond with.

Eventually they caught him in one of the science labs with the half-dissected, partially-replaced body of a student. Sasori desperately tried to explain that he was trying to make certain that the student would live on forever, but they didn't listen. He managed to escape into the Abyss before they could sentence him to jail or institutionalize him.

For a while he lived with Hatter, continuing his experiments in turning people into puppets and frequently putting on shows at Hatter's circus. When he noticed the first signs of wrinkles, he sped up the pace on the project and managed to mostly perfect himself - converting his body except for his heart into a perfect doll, with no age or weakness.

Eventually, he was contacted by the organization Akatsuki, which had found out about his skills and wanted his aid. He joined willingly, seeing an end to his boredom and a chance to further his experiments. He moved to Elysium with his new protection, although he still made frequent trips to the Abyss. He now spends his time alternating between aiding the Akatsuki and helping out at the Circus.
